GIA Digital Only Certificates

Disclaimer: Since publishing this article in January 2023, the GIA has reintroduced printed reports which you can find more information on here.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced plans to convert all its paper reports to digital form by 2025. As per 1 January 2023, GIA’s Dossier Reports (carat range 0.15 to 2.99 carats) are fully digital.

What has changed as per January 1st 2023?

You will not receive a physical certificate for GIA diamonds within the 0.15 to 2.99 carat range that have been certified after 1 January 2023. However, any dossiers certified before this date will still have physical certificate accompanying the diamond.

This change only applies to GIA certified diamonds. All other labs such as IGI and HRD still provide physical copies of their certificates and have no plans to move to a digital only certificate yet.

Can I verify the diamond details?

The diamond will come with a GIA sticker containing a QR code which can be scanned to retrieve the digital certificate and verify the details.

Can I see which diamonds come with a digital only certificate on Nivoda?

We are still developing this functionality. You will be able to see on the platform if a diamond has a digital only certificate.
